Ust-Kamenogorsk, Kazakhstan, July 18, 2018 – Indonesia’s Garuda went for their best finish at fifth place in the SMM 2018 Asian Women’s Club Volleyball Championship on Wednesday after defeating Iran’s Paykan 3-0 (27-25, 25-18, 25-19) at the Boris Alexandrov Sports Palace.
Aprilia Manganang was the best scorer of the match, with 23 points from 19 attacks, three blocks and a service winner.
The match started with a tight race for each point, as both teams fielded in their best hitters on the floor. Garuda had Aprilia, Amalia Nabila and Nandita Salsabila, while Paykan had Mahsa Kadkhoda, Maedeh Borhani and Fatemeh Amini. The Iran club managed a three-point edge (23-20), running their plays with much composure. Their opponents fought their way back slowly to extend the set. Garuda’s Wilda Sugandi scored off a block and Aprilia served up an ace to seal the first set at 27-25.
In the next set, Paykan took 8-5 at the first technical time-out with Borhani at the wing and backline, and Tahmineh Dargazani working at the middle. Garuda responded by playing tight defense, both by the net and their second line. They ran their counter-attacks patiently and even performed well from the service line, to equalize at 12-12. The Indonesian side maintained good defense and attack, even with their substitutes Novia Andriyanti and Amasya Manganang, to help take 25-18 in the second set.
Garuda seized good momentum going into the third set. Setter Mutiara Retno delivered steady orchestration of her plays, sending out the offense to Aprilia and Amasya. The Indonesia club also played well in transition, while their opponents seemed to play loosely, without apparent ardor for a comeback. Garuda had established a commanding lead and, and even with their errors in latter plays, they took the third set to a 25-19 finish.
